KUALA LUMPUR
KUALA LUMPUR: Global airlines called on Monday for concerted action to prevent another runaway surge in oil prices as the International Air Transport Association nearly doubled its forecast of industry losses to $9 billion in 2009.The head of the Geneva-based airline lobby lambasted "greedy speculation" in oil markets and accused governments of squandering money raised from aviation while carriers suffer from still slumping demand."This is the most difficult situation the industry has faced," IATA Director General Giovanni Bisignani told the aviation body's annual meeting in the Malaysian capital."I am a realist. I don't see facts to support optimism."However, John Leahy, commercial director at European aircraft manufacturer Airbus, said that while 2009 would be tough, plans by United Airlines to order as many as 150 new planes from Airbus or rival Boeing Co showed the market was starting to turn."Cancellations are not as much of an issue as deferrals. I don't think we'll have that many more cancellations," he said in an interview.

Israeli forces kill three Gaza gunmen
Israeli forces killed three Palestinian militants who tried to cross into Israel from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, Hamas and Palestinian medical workers said.
The clash began when Palestinian gunmen, under cover of early morning fog, fired at an Israeli patrol near Karni crossing on the Israeli side of the border fence, residents and Hamas said.
Medical workers initially reported four gunmen killed.
A Hamas radio station said at least 10 Palestinian militants, some on horseback, were involved in the attack, the largest since Israel ended a three-week offensive in the Gaza Strip on January 18.
An Israeli military spokeswoman said soldiers opened fire after being shot at by gunmen trying to cross into Israel. No Israelis were wounded in the attack, the spokeswoman said.
"As long as the border crossings are not secure there is no point in even raising the question of their opening," said Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor.
"Hamas is, by it's actions and by it's inaction causing the plights of the residents of Gaza, and this is something the Palestinians must know," he said."Those martyrs and this blood will not break the will of the Palestinian people," said Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas's leader in the Gaza Strip.

Israel tightened its blockade of the Gaza Strip after Hamas Islamists seized the territory in 2007.
Residents said the Palestinian militants fired anti-tank weapons and set off explosives. The body of a horse killed in the battle lay beside one of the dead gunmen.

David Bain's extended family are taking legal advice over whether he could seek an inheritance following his not guilty verdicts at the High Court in Christchurch last week.
It is uncertain whether Bain could take a share of the family estate of three properties and cash investments now he is a free man, 15 years after the deaths of his parents and three siblings.
Bain's lawyer David Reed QC is not prepared to discuss the inheritance, but says the issue of compensation will be examined in a fortnight.
Bain and his campaigner Joe Karam are expected to leave Christchurch for the North Island on Tuesday. ONE News
